So, it’s been what? eight months? Something like that…  But who’s counting.

I have to admit I’ve shown very little love to this site in a long time. In fact, it was stuck in malware limbo for awhile –  I simply didn’t have the time to clean it up. Admittedly, photography has been taking the bulk of my creative energy and effort.

A few other things happened along the way that slowed my music down. As stupid as it may sound, the OS X Lion upgrade effectively killed my audio setup, forcing me into new hardware. Since I wasn’t actively producing music, that purchase got pushed to the back burner. Ideas have been accumulating on Garageband for iPad. There was also a strange mixup with my dPulse Europe record deal. I won’t go into details but let’s just say that I have zero knowledge of any of the CD sales since my catalog was switched over. Ahh… the music business. Whatever. It’s not like any of them ever went platinum.

But I now have a contract with dPulse outright (dPulse Europe, an independent affiliate, no longer exists) and Dean has been extremely forthcoming with all aspects of communications. I’m now feeling very good about the situation and glad it’s been resolved.

dPulse has also agreed to release material in various forms — meaning not necessarily a full-length album. This fits in perfectly with how I intend to produce music going forward, concentrating on more concise and less intensive projects. Part of this has to do with time constraints but I’m also looking forward to creating shorter collections of songs, along the lines of Crack These Arms Electric or In Darkness.  Sustaining a whole album is hard work and doesn’t always benefit the songs themselves, forcing style and pacing decisions based on a 45 minutes sitting. A full-length album of short piano songs can be a stretch but would fit in perfectly with an EP format. Kinda like a short playlist.

I’ve started working on such an EP entitled Chase & Mercury.

Let’s see where we go from here.

Since I don’t come around these parts too often (!) let me wish you all the best for the Holidays and 2012. Go easy on the giant asteroids and mega volcanos ;)

Best

This is a new song. And it’s in french.

It’s something I’d never done before. Not out of ideology or stubbornness or anything… inertia maybe?
When it comes to music I’ve always defaulted to the english language. I guess I just fell into it very early on and it simply became second nature. I can read and speak and write both languages quite naturally but singing, for me, has always felt like an english thing. Even though I listen to a ton of french artists – seriously, the Quebec rock scene is just bursting with original talent these days.

So it’s a first. Sure took me a while didn’t it?
It’s called Électre. Inspiration needs to remain a mystery for the time being.
And btw: listen to this L-O-U-D if you can ;)
